Rules & Policies

Persons under the age of 21 are not allowed to possess or consume alcoholic beverages in any area of the University of Minnesota residence halls. Unless restricted by your organization’s policy, persons of legal age may possess and consume alcoholic beverages within their private room. Events involving alcohol in other areas of the campus require prior University approval between the organization and the University.

Smoking and using, selling, free distributing, and advertising tobacco or marijuana products and electronic cigarettes is prohibited on all University property. See the Information Desk for more information about the closest location where you can smoke or use tobacco products.

Weapons are strictly prohibited on campus, including in our residence halls and apartments. The U of M Police Department will be notified if a weapon is being carried anywhere within residential buildings.

The University has created a policy ensuring a safe environment for youth on campus, consisting of several parts. These include mandatory reporting, program registration, background checks, education and training, and health and safety.

All non-University organizations must be able to provide documentation to the University certifying that all individuals who will be interacting with minors have received training and undergone the criminal background check that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of this policy.
