Overview and History
Sanford Hall is located on the Minneapolis campus near Dinkytown, a commercial
and eating establishment area on the East Bank. Sanford has its own dining hall
located in the building. The East Bank is home to programs such as Mathematics,
Engineering, Science, Women's Studies, Psychology, Architecture, and Language
Studies among others. Sanford is located near Williams (basketball) and Mariucci
(hockey) Arenas, the University Hospital/Health Sciences complex, the new Sports
Pavilion, University Recreational Center, Natatorium (swimming) and Stadium
Village, a local shopping and eating area. From Sanford, these buildings are
easily accessible by foot, bike, and the free campus shuttle system.
Sanford Hall was constructed in 1910 and expanded with the addition
of a tower unit in 1964. The hall can now accomodated 502 guests. Sanford was named after Maria L. Sanford, Professor of Rhetoric and
Elocution at the University from 1880-1909. Its original
colonial-style architecture provides for a variety of room styles
in the older part of the building.
